Falling Safely - Presented by Elliott Royce
Posted by Darlyne Erickson
Elliott presents to the club this example of what he would like to present to other groups
A few interesting facts: sooner or later we will all experience a fall
There are 40 million seniors in the US – they experience 12 million falls annually
Seniors fall once every three years on average. At 80 years one half of seniors fall annually
The CDC reported in 2006 that unintentional falls were the #1 reason that adults over 45 visit hospital emergency rooms.
Each week > 30,000 Americans over the age of 65 are seriously injured by falling
Hip fractures are the most common fall injury – 24% die within one year
The cost of fall injuries increase dramatically each year of age
Falls account for 25% of all hospital admissions
Medicare costs for each injury caused by a fall is approx. $18,000 – 20 billion annually!!!!
Costs for treating falls is 2x greater for women than men
Only 20% of treatment costs are for internal organ injuries – most for head, hip and leg surgery
40% of all nursing home placement is because of fall
Google "seniors falling" for thousands of statistics about the costs and repercussions of falling
It is anticipated that by 2030 the numbers will double – as the Boomers age
Elliott has personal experience with falling which resulted in his family encouraging him to move into senior housing – he has since moved and is happier to have the choice on where he lives. There are many course locally on ‘falls prevention’ which speak to the obvious – removing all debris from the floor, including any rugs and cords, etc., putting up grab bars in places where you may need to be steadied, use assistive devices when necessary [canes, walkers, etc] . . . .
Elliott wanted instead to know how to fall safely if in fact it may be a reality – he called all over the Twin City area and was unsuccessful, so went to the internet. He found one teacher in Hawaii – so he bought a ticket and made the trip and spent a week learning the "twist-bend-roll" method.
For the past 3-4 years he has made a daily practice of ‘falling’ – using an air mattress on the floor – a side benefit is learning to get up off the floor, which most seniors have difficulty doing. Watch young kids – they do it so naturally This is probably not for older seniors – should start in your 50’s or 60’s or as able
