"I am very sorry to hear Elliott passed away. I was very concerned about him since I had not heard from him in awhile. My father served with him on the USS Chiwawa AO-68. I am the author of the book about the USS Chiwawa. I enjoyed visiting with Elliott and will miss him a lot.
I always enjoyed visiting with your dad. He was the first person I ever spoke to that served aboard the USS Chiwawa beside my dad. He was patient with me and was of great help in writing a chapter about the collision with USS LSM-111. I don't know if he ever showed you my book. If you are interested, I have a Facebook page about the ship.
Talking about the past was not something your dad relished. He lived in the moment and looked to the future. I always enjoyed hearing about his travels especially his fascination with ants. I will miss visiting with him.
There are so many thought going through my head right now it's hard to get it all down. I have been thinking about him a lot in the last few days. I will never forget his kindness and generosity."

We will remember him fondly and be inspired by his kindness."

"Hi Sandie:
I wanted to reach out to express my condolences on the loss of your dad. I never realized you were Elliott Royce’s daughter! What an amazing man, a timeless treasure of St. Louis Park!
I first met Elliott during my son’s 8th grade band concert at SLP Jr. High. The band director publically introduced his senior tuba player from the stage, but that really wasn’t necessary, because after the concert Elliot greeted practically every parent one-on-one. Over the years, I would run into Elliott at many SLP community events (often on his bike or in his cat-in-the-hat hat), and he always had a smile and some words of wisdom to share. When he became a fixture at Byerly’s weekly sampling booths, he would always strike up a conversation – sometimes about the food/sometime not, but always with good humor and a twinkle in his eye.
My own dad died a year ago, although we lost him many years before to dementia. How grateful you must be that your dad lived such a long and well-lived life; so engaged with people, so full of the joy of life. My best to you and your family." --Susan Byers

"I am so sad to hear of my dear Elliott's passing. My mother and I loved him dearly and I will truly miss his living, kind, generous spirit. I just spoke to my mother who is now 94 yrs old. She wanted me to let all of you know how much she loved her cousin Elliott. He was like gold to us, a rare gem and his memory will always be with us. This is a huge loss for me personally as Elliott was my savior when I was incarcerated over twenty years ago. He came to see me, wrote me letters every week and kept me from feeling the shame that I had bestowed on my family.
May his memory be for a blessing. I truly loved Elliott as did my mother, his cousin Miriam. I will say Kaddish for my dearest Elliott and your family, which is mine. He had such love and humanity and I am blessed to have been part of his life. Love and prayers to all of you." --Nancy Eiger & Miriam Brandstatter

He is truly an amazing man, who cares deeply about other people, particularly those disadvantaged or in need, and has been active in trying to help them. Above all, he is and has always been his own man, who lives his values proudly and publicly, but is humble about taking credit for what he does. "Please accept my deepest condolences, I really thought a great deal of your father, he was a very special man. I have very fond memories of him. Pericles said, “What we leave behind is not that which is engraved in stone monuments, what we leave behind is that which is woven into the lives of others.” Your father wove his life into everyone he came into contact with! I will miss him, as I know you will, but his life is never over until no one knows he lived, and that will be a long time from now! Again, I am deeply saddened by the news, please accept my sympathy." --Kevin Gleitz

"I am devastated to hear this. There is something i would like to tell you about your father and my friendship. When David and I married almost 57 years ago, we faced a lot of resistance from his parents and mine and some other relatives, because of our religious differences. Your father, whom I had not yet met, sent me a letter welcoming me into the family. I have never forgotten how much this generous, understanding and sensitive action on his part meant to me, and we have remained good friends ever since.
We emailed frequently, he stayed here several times, and he has to be the most creative and imaginative person with so many varied interests, that I have ever known. This is hard news, coming as it does so close to our loss of Lester last August." --Donna Gottlieb

“He set a great example for enjoying life. He'd ride around Excelsior & Grand on his big tricycle, with his tall red and white Dr. Suess hat and stop in at the stores to tell us of his latest video on how to fall. Often he'd bring us bananas. One day he taught me about ant architecture. I will dearly miss this kind-hearted, joyful character. May his memory be a blessing.” --Leslie Martin

"May his memory and his youthfulness, vigor, and zest for life be an example for all of the younger generation. He was a friend, and a model for anyone who thinks that age is a barrier for dreams, desires, and accomplishments. He was a kind, generous, and iving person who always thought of helping others and being of assistance to those in need. I miss his antics, energy, his balloons, his demos at Byerlys and his humor aka, Dr. Suess. I know that the heavens are laughing and welcoming him with open arms.. He will be missed, but his legacy will be a shining star for all those who were touched by him. May his memory be an example for everyone to model themselves by his life and good deeds, and be a blessing for all time." --Elliot Miller

"We are all so sad to hear about your father. We loved when he would come around and visit at Bubbly Paws, it always put a smile on our faces. He loved bringing in dog-related articles and we always joked about putting our dog on the back on his bike. He always brought a smile to our day when he would stop in. Thanks for sharing the website, and again we are so sorry! He will be missed by all the businesses at Excelsior and Grand!"

"Funny how random events can affect a life. My wife Shirley and I met Elliott on a Elderhostel trip to Spain, May 2001. Because I kept records of all our Elderhostel trips, this one was especially memorable. Elliott was memorable: a remarkable, friendly demeanor. A born storyteller, terrific company. And a great letter writer. I think we corresponded for a few years. It's his energy level that I remember. I think he was in his 90's when he took classes at a gym in how to fall properly, An unusual, lovable friend."

"My thoughts return to several gatherings at your family home in St. Louis Park, before the days when we had our own homes. Your Dad provided a warm and welcoming place for the college kids--I was mesmerized! It was a lovely evening in the lovely downstairs. You invited a few of us to share the Seder dinner with the family, with your Dad explaining and telling stories. And, of course, there are wonderful memories of your backyard wedding, again with your Dad as the gracious and happy host. You have so many, many memories. Cherish them. --Patsy Mogush

"Thank you SO MUCH for letting me know about Elliott's situation. He and I have enjoyed MANY Sunday morning breakfasts during these last few years (In fact I was planning to call him about the possibility of our next Sunday breakfast this weekend).
I have truly benefited from my association with him. I first met him as a volunteer in my band class about 10-12 years ago but since then have felt a true friendship with him. Our school band program and I have benefited from his generosity of time and resources over the years but I have BENEFITED THE MOST from the friendship he provided.
I'm sure you will not be surprised to hear the significant impact Elliott has had on my life."

"My name is Lynn, and I'm a 28-year-old professional musician and music therapist in the area. I had the absolute joy of meeting Elliott back in the early summer of 2010. One day I was riding my bike down Excelsior Blvd, when I see this beautiful man with a bright pink top hat. Big smile, and clearly ready to connect with anybody who passes his way. I was charmed. I pulled over and approached him to say hello and ask some questions.
He immediately invited me to join him, which I happily did - We rode down Excelsior Blvd, and around the park near his apartment at the time. Loved every second, and loved hearing how this specially-engineered bike came to be. He was so open and alive, and just an exciting new friend in my world... I remember when he told me he was 91, I only ended up living in St. Louis Park for 6 months; it's been several years since I've seen him. I've thought of him regularly though, sending him a blessing and gratitude for the incredible inspiration. His vitality, generosity and playfulness was evident from a block away, and I can only IMAGINE the impact he has had on all in his world. I have enjoyed reading stories about him online and reminiscing about our fortunate meeting.
I'm so truly sorry for your loss. I'm sending comfort, empathy and light to you and all those who know him. And, to know Elliott is to love Elliott. I am brighter, more playful, more creative, and more inspired to be alive because of him.

"Hi Cindy, I saw on Beth's FB page the darling video of your dad. I am so sorry for your loss. What a wonderful man. I know how hard it is to lose a dad. I am happy that you had so many years with him…giving you many many beautiful memories. So, I have to share with you. We own Techline, on Excelsior Blvd in SLP. For a while now, this sweet little older gentlemen would stop by on occasion to chat briefly. He would always give us a bunch of bananas (Kevin's favorite…eats one every day!) and leave his card. Kevin had a real soft spot for this guy. Tonight I was sharing the video of Beth's with Kevin, and he's says…"That is my Banana Friend!!". Wow. Had we only put two and two together a while back, we could have shared with him that we knew you! What a small world. So again I want to say that both Kevin and I are so very sorry for your loss. We will be thinking of you.

My thanks to Elliott for his efforts over the years and for sharing his fun and vibrant persona with the Park. I know a lot of people have enjoyed his presence, young and old."

"St. Louis Park School Foundation Board and friends,
Many of you know Elliot. He's an institution in St. Louis Park, famous for his trampolining, his art-of-falling classes, his Dr. Seuss bike, his opening of the Rec Center pool each June with the ceremonial first slide, and greeting and chatting with many during coffee time at Starbucks. He's 95 or 96 and it seems he may have only a short time remaining.

He has set an example of a caring life for all of the friends and acquaintances. I am thinking of him and wish him peace."

“Elliott was a one of a kind man and a love! I will miss him so much, as will many, many people. I see his face so clearly, when he would tell me something was good with a click of his tongue and an A-OK sign! I feel the loss for his family and his other loved ones. I am terribly sorry.”

"Elliott was an amazing person! He was a joy to be with. He was an important part of PACER and also my life! His zest for life was wonderful! My 7 year old Grandson in Santa Monica told my son Robert a week ago that Grandma Paula has a friend who is 90 and still jumps on a trampoline! I send you my love!" --Paula Goldberg

"Elliott certainly has been a prominent figure in St. Louis Park. I think I first spotted him in about 2004 on his trike when I first moved to apartments near the smaller Target, and of course after I began working for the Sun Sailor I've enjoyed talking to him throughout the years. My thanks to Elliott for his efforts over the years and for sharing his fun and vibrant persona with the Park. I know a lot of people have enjoyed his presence, young and old."

"Hello Cindy. I am a old Talmud Torah classmate of yours. I just saw your fathers obit and want to offer you and your siblings my condolences. I came to know your father over the years from his being at the JCC, working serving hot chocolate at Park Nicollet, giving samples out at Byerley's and always riding his trike with his signature Cat in the Hat hat. The last time I saw him was at the Parktacular parade in June. His memory should always be for a blessing and your and your siblings should be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. His memory should always be for a blessing." --Conrad Segal

Judy, your father is a truly inspirational and amazing man. Thank you for passing on this information, and know that the heart of the city is with you and your family during this time. Please give him all our best, and let him know how special he has been to us." --Tracy Vig
