MEMORIES
WALTER TSCHINKEL
I was so sorry to hear of Elliott's death, and offer your family my sincerest condolences.
Although I didn't meet Elliott until he was 88, he was an inspiration to me for showing how vital and active one could be in old age. His undiminished curiosity and love of new experiences was the hallmark of his life, and was so meaningful a trait that I worked it into a commencement speech I gave to 18,000 people in 2007. He was truly an example, and I was lucky to have met him.
Elliott came down to Florida to participate in my ant research a few years ago, and it was great to work with him, experience his good spirits, enjoy his humor and to share what I had to share.
I regret that it never worked out again. Nevertheless, we stayed in occasional touch, and Elliott's devotion to and pride in his family were quite apparent in his correspondence.
Life certainly was not wasted on Elliott. Your family has lost a wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather,
but your family was also very lucky to have had him at all.
Sincerely,
Walter
