LESTER GOTTLIEB (Elliott's 70th Birthday in 1989)
SIXTY-THREE YEARS WITH E. ELLIOTT ROYCE
By A. Lester Gottlieb
1926: Taught me to throw snowballs.
1928: Showed me how to play Kick the Stick on the corner of Vincent and 12th St. in North Minneapolis.
1938: Inspired me to be a champion debater at West High--like he was.
1942: Entered Pharmacy School at the University of Minnesota--like he did.
1944: Joined the Navy--like he did.
1946: Went back to Pharmacy School--like he did.
1989: I taught him how to use Crystal Sticks. NOW WE'RE EVEN!!!
One more thing: Elliott went to Boot Camp at Great Lakes Naval Training Station a week or so before I went. He called me from there to advise what to bring.
"Les," he said, "this is important. Don't bring anything--no money, no sweater, no change of clothes, not even a toothbrush. They give you everything, even money. You would just have to send your clothes and stuff back."
I was so pleased to get this inside info. Thanks Elliott. I arrived at Great Lakes on a cold, rainy June day. Our boot company didn't form immediately as his did, so for three or four days I had no money, no coat, no toothbrush. My big cousin let me down.
Elliott, since this is your 70th birthday, I forgive you.
