Sandie's response to Bat Sheva (Nov. 19, 2015)
My Sweet Shushu,
What a beautifully written and poignant letter you sent us this morning! And, way to go with your running and now your biking - Shush moving through space! Your letter was such a gift to receive and it immediately inspired me to think about what fear I could face today that yesterday would never have been a consideration.
Thank you for putting into words how important it is to work through challenges, including those that we construct all by ourselves, and those that others aim to defeat us with.
Reading about how you put into practice what Grandpa taught us is so admirable. He did live an incredibly full life AND he also passed on tremendous wisdom on how we can live incredible lives as well.
To my way of thinking, one of his most important was to approach all challenges with the mindset that everything is solvable and that the journey in solving and facing challenges - no matter how preposterous, think ants mating in space! - was the path to a meaningful life filled wonder and joy. That we should run TOWARDS fear and anxiety and that the sensation of embracing a challenge made life more fun. (While smiling, he often said of a problem: "Come on Elliott, you can figure this out!")
To be sure, he also didn't take himself too seriously and he sure as hell didn't care what others thought of him. Instead he faced the process of living and learning with gusto and delight and he never stopped being curious, no matter where his imagination took him.
Shush, I love you and your beautiful family with all my heart. Hilleli is such a sweetie pie. I'm so happy you wrote us all. Knowing that Grandpa is not forgotten, but rather lives on in how you approach your life, touches me in a place so deep in my heart it almost hurts. He adored you, loved you, was so proud of you, thought you were beautiful inside and out, and that you were so kind and considerate. He felt your love and admiration as well. He often said that he luckiest guy in the world and his family was the absolute best.
Thank you again for reminding me of what an incredible family I have. I miss Grandpa and Garry terribly but I'm determined to live life to the fullest, to squeeze out days and nights that are meaningful and full of joy and delight. Reading your note this morning validated those feelings and inspire me to keep on trying.
Hugs and kisses to each of you. I am here for you and love you ALWAYS!
With a heart overflowing with admiration and love,
Sandie
